Orbi Router No Lights

7 min read · Reviewed by the orbi.help editorial team · Updated 28 August 2026

A dark Orbi ring doesn't automatically mean the router is dead. Work through these checks in order to separate normal LED behavior from a genuine power or connection problem.

First: does "no lights" mean it's broken?

Not necessarily. On supported Orbi models, the router's ring LED can be off when the router is connected to the internet. So if your WiFi and internet are working, a dark ring may be normal.

Check the WiFi before resetting anything. If your devices can connect to Orbi and browse the internet, don't factory-reset the router just because the ring light is off.

Identify which Orbi light is off

The ring LED on the top or front reports setup and internet status. The separate Power LED, normally beside the Power button on the rear, reports whether the router is receiving power. Their meanings are different, and the exact location varies by model.

Model differences matter. LED positions, colours and patterns vary across Orbi generations. Check the manual for your exact RBR or CBR model if its behaviour does not match this guide.

1. Check the power

Make sure the Orbi power adapter is firmly connected to both the wall outlet and the router. Check the cable for obvious damage. Use only the adapter specified for your exact model; an adapter that fits physically might still have the wrong electrical rating.

2. Check the Power button

If your model has a physical Power On/Off button, make sure it is switched on. Give the router several minutes to finish starting before deciding that nothing is happening.

3. Try another outlet

Test the outlet with another device. Temporarily bypass an extension lead, smart plug or surge protector and connect Orbi directly to a known-working wall outlet.

4. See whether your Orbi WiFi still works

Open WiFi settings on your phone or computer and look for your Orbi network. If you can connect and reach the internet, the router is operating even if its ring is dark.

5. Restart the modem and Orbi in order

  1. Turn off the modem.
  2. Turn off the Orbi router.
  3. Wait about 30 seconds.
  4. Turn the modem back on and wait for it to reconnect.
  5. Turn the Orbi router back on.
  6. Wait for startup to finish, then test WiFi.

6. Check the Ethernet connection

If Orbi has power but there's no internet, check the Ethernet cable between the modem and the Orbi router's Internet/WAN port. If the cable looks damaged, try another compatible Ethernet cable.

7. Disconnect optional devices

Temporarily unplug USB accessories and non-essential Ethernet devices, leaving only power and the modem connection. Start the router again. If it boots normally, reconnect the other devices one at a time.

8. Check for an abnormal Power LED

NETGEAR documents a pulsing red Power LED as a sign that the Orbi system might need attention. Restart the router once. If the red pattern returns or the router cannot complete startup, use the support page for your exact model to check its firmware recovery instructions; do not repeatedly factory-reset it.

What the Orbi ring light can mean

Ring stateMeaning on supported models
Solid whiteRouter is ready for setup.
Pulsing whiteRouter is powering up or attempting a WPS connection.
Solid magentaOrbi has no internet connection.
OffOn supported models, the router is connected to the internet.

What if every light is off?

If the power LED is also off and the router is completely unresponsive, verify the outlet, correct power adapter, cable and Power button. If a known-working outlet makes no difference, the adapter or router hardware may have failed. Do not test it with an unverified third-party adapter.

Don't factory-reset it too soon

A factory reset wipes the current Orbi configuration. If the router has power, start with a restart and basic connection checks instead. Reset only when you have a reason to believe the configuration itself needs to be cleared.

Orbi has no lights after a power outage

Start with the outlet and power adapter. Reconnect the router and give it time to boot. If other devices work from the outlet but the Orbi remains completely unresponsive, the problem may be with the power supply or router hardware.

Frequently asked questions

Why does my Orbi router have no lights?

A dark ring can be normal on supported models when the router is connected to the internet. If the power LED is also off and the router isn't working, check the power source and adapter.

Why is my Orbi router completely dark?

Check the power adapter, outlet, Power button and cable. If the router remains unresponsive, a power or hardware problem is possible.

Should I reset Orbi if there are no lights?

No. First determine whether the router has power and whether your WiFi works. A factory reset shouldn't be the first troubleshooting step.

Why is the Orbi ring light off but WiFi works?

This can be normal. NETGEAR documents the ring as off when the router is connected to the internet on supported models.
